Fable Forge FAQs

Please reach out to support@fableforge.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Dungeons and Dragons (or DnD / D&D) is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG). You create a character and take them on an adventure with others using your imagination. It's collaborative storytelling, meaning that all the players have a huge amount of freedom in deciding where they want to go and what they want to do. The limit is your imagination.

Nope! When you book a session with Fable Forge, you just need to show up ready for a good time. The Game Master will provide all the materials needed and guide you on how to play.

One player called the Dungeon Master (DM) sets the scene, describing the environment around you. You and your fellow adventurers decide how you'd like to respond. Since your character will be good at some things and not so good at others, the Dungeon Master may ask you to roll dice to determine whether you succeed or fail in what you are trying to do. This is the basic gameplay loop.

DM: You're trudging through a dark forest when suddenly you hear the snap of a tree branch to your left. You turn and see a group of goblins trying to sneak up and ambush you.

Player 1: I'd like to try and hide up a tree.

DM: Ok, roll a Stealth Check please.

Player 1: Nice! I got a 17.

DM: Great! You manage to scramble up the nearest tree without any of them noticing.

Player 2: I'd like to cast a spell to make it sound like there's a huge dragon behind them to distract them.

DM: Ok, roll an Arcana Check please.

Player 2: Oof, I only rolled a 3!

DM: Alright... So you go to cast the spell but it misfires. Suddenly there's a huge illusion of a dragon next to Player 1 in the tree and it roars!

Player 1: I scream and take out my bow to shoot an arrow at it.

DM: As you do, the goblins see this and... *goblin voice* "Eeeep! There be dragons in this forest!"

Nope! It's simple maths, and the software we use does it all for you anyway!

As for communication, you can play whatever character you like and you don't have to put on a costume, speak in a different accent, or be an expert in dramatic skills. You can just describe what they'd like to do and the DM will fill in the gaps. Of course, you're always welcome to be incredibly dramatic!

A Dungeon Master (DM) is the game master. They are the referee of the rules, the guide who sets the scene, and the person who plays every other character or monster you'll encounter in your adventure.

They don't control the story alone, but they provide a guide as you make your choices.

With Fable Forge, just a good internet connection and a curious spirit!

During the game, you'll be referring to your character's skills and items, as well as rolling dice. However, Fable Forge will provide all of these and you can either get the DM to do it for you, or you can roll virtual dice and read your character sheet online.

If you have physical dice and paper character sheets, you're welcome to use those!

We've often found that young people make some of the best adventurers and tell some of the best stories in D&D!

Every game is different. Some are funny, others are heroic, others are tragic. Most are a mixture of these and more. At Fable Forge, we will always tell stories and introduce themes that are appropriate for the ages of the participants. If you have any questions about the safeguarding of children and young people during our sessions, please see our Safeguarding policy (the link is at the bottom of the page).

D&D is for everyone. But even if someone believes it's nerdy, what's wrong with that?

In a world where it's increasingly 'cringe' to be your authentic self, we at Fable Forge believe that being nerdy simply means being passionate about something and enjoying it. We all love movies, books, TV shows, games and the like. D&D is the most interactive way to tell a great story and practice being a hero.

Head to our Home page or our Bookings page to select the type of session you'd like and the time that works best for you.

We offer a whole bunch of great sessions for players of all stripes and experience levels:

  • 5-Session Starter Series: This series of five 1-hour sessions will give you everything you need to play D&D by teaching you the basics as you play through a 5-part adventure. By the end, you'll have completed a full quest and you can choose to continue it in a full campaign with us, or take it home with you and run it yourself!
  • One-Shot - New Player: Just want to dip your toes in the D&D waters? This is a self-contained, 3-hour story where you'll learn to play. At the end you can always book another to continue your questing life!
  • One-Shot - Experienced Player: Played D&D before? This is a self-contained, 3-hour story where you'll dive straight in! At the end, you can always book another and continue the story further, or begin a whole new one!
  • Dungeon Master Training: Ok, so you've played the game but now you want to be the boss and run a game for others? This crash course will teach you all you need to know about how to become the next best Dungeon Master!
  • Dungeon Master Consultation: Already DMing a campaign but want to take it to the next level? This is a chance to get 1-on-1 with a pro and hear the secrets of what makes a truly unforgettable adventure!
  • Events: Want a professional DM to come with all the gear and run a full story in-person for a party or other event? Get in touch and we can arrange a tailor-made session for you and your event.

Other than events hired for your venue, currently all of our sessions are being run online.

HOWEVER! We are in the process of setting up a dedicated hall space for in-person session which we hope to launch soon!

A Zoom account helps, but it isn't necessary to join a Zoom call. Just follow the link you receive when you book and you can either join in your browser if you're on a computer or through the app.

For all our sessions, we will need to both see and hear you, so yes you will need a functioning webcam and microphone.

DnD Beyond if the official online platform created by Wizards of the Coast, the owners of Dungeons and Dragons. It can do a whole bunch of stuff including character creation and management, virtual maps and tabletops, rules, lore, and more.

We use DnD Beyond to manage your character and roll dice. If you already have a DnD Beyond account, do let us know and we'd be happy to link to it during the session.

You will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to access the session at the time of your booking. We will take payment at the time of the booking.

Session length and content varies depending on the booking (e.g. One-Shots run for 3 hours in total). Sessions begin and end on-time, so try not to be late!

For D&D games, we need at least 2 players to run it. D&D with only 1 DM and 1 player is technically possible, but it is a different dynamic so we don't currently offer it at Fable Forge. For online sessions, we have a maximum of 5 players since the online format means it is harder to ensure everyone gets a chance to speak if there are too many people. For in-person sessions, we can do up to 8 players.

For DM training or consultancy, we can do group sessions or on a 1:1 basis. There is no maximum number (within reason!)

Definitely! Parents and carers are welcome to observe but it isn't necessary. Upon booking you will be given access to our safeguarding policy (also available at the bottom of this page) and you will sign consent indicating you have authorised their participation in the session and are aware that age-appropriate content will be delivered.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for full details (available at the bottom of this page.)

We realise that sometimes life gets in the way and you may need to change your booking. The following refund and reschedule options are available to you, depending on the nature and timing of the cancellation:

  • More than 48 hours before the session:
    • Full refund, or
    • Free rescheduling, subject to availability
  • Within 48 hours of the session:
    • One free reschedule, subject to availability, or
    • 50% refund
  • Less than 24 hours or no-show:
    • No refund unless exceptional circumstances are given
  • 5-session series
    • This is treated as one purchase, not five individual purchases. Once begun, individual sessions cannot normally be cancelled for a refund.
    • For exceptional circumstances, we will endeavour to reschedule any individual sessions within the five

We'd love to be part of your event! Contact us by email or book an Events session and we can arrange a tailor-made session for you at your venue, lasting as long as you choose. We'll provide all the gear needed.

All of our sessions start on-time and cannot overrun to make up for lost time at the start. We recommend you test your internet connection and equipment beforehand, and join the session several minutes early to avoid being late.

If you're late to the session, we'll let you jump in at the point you arrive, but cannot offer refunds for this reason.

We know these things sometimes happen and hopefully you'll be able to get things up and running again.

We will make reasonable efforts to communicate with you as you resolve the problem and can rejoin the session. If this is not possible, we will attempt to reschedule depending on the circumstances. See our Terms and Conditions page for full details.

We do not usually take screenshots, photos, or video/audio recordings of our sessions.

If we would like to do so to create promotional material for our services, we will communicate this with you ahead of time and only do so with your informed consent. No matter how glamourous you may look on Zoom, you are of course welcome to say no.

We ask that you refrain from recording any images, video, or audio of our sessions for two reasons:

  1. We would request informed consent of everyone involved, especially if under 18s are in the session.
  2. We'd hate to spoil the experience for anyone who hasn't yet tried one of our sessions!

If you would like to capture any moments from your session, you'd need to get informed consent from us and from all participants (including parents/carers of participants who are under 18.)

Your Dungeon Master promises not to put your character in unfair situations where you couldn't possibly have known that this was a deadly encounter.

However, if you're given all the warning signs and still decide to charge ahead totally unprepared into a dragon's lair... Your Dungeon Master will seek to make your demise as entertaining as possible, and we hope you will have learned your lesson <3
